Geocell: Stabilising the Ground Beneath Your Project

Geocell: Stabilising the Ground Beneath Your Project

Why ground stabilisation matters

Geocell stops loose ground from moving: one lightweight panel expands to cover 15.3 m² and locks gravel, soil or grass in place on paths, gardens and slopes up to 45 degrees.

Unconfined gravel ruts and migrates. Bare slopes wash out in the first heavy rain. Lawns with heavy foot traffic turn to mud. Each of these problems has the same root cause: nothing is holding the fill material in place. Geocell, part of our TERRA Line, solves that by giving the ground a structure, while letting water drain straight through.

How Geocell works

Geocell is a 3D cellular confinement system: a honeycomb of perforated polyethylene strips that you stretch open on site and fill.

Each panel arrives folded flat and opens out to 6,000 mm × 2,550 mm, forming individual cells of roughly 320 × 300 mm. Once filled, every cell holds its own share of material. Loads spread sideways across the walls of neighbouring cells instead of pushing down into one spot, so the surface resists rutting, sliding and washout.

The cell walls are perforated, so the system is 100% permeable. Rainwater passes through the fill and into the ground below rather than running off the surface.

Choose your depth

Geocell comes in four depths; the deeper the cell, the steeper the slope and the heavier the use it can take.

Best for

Geocell H50

8750

50

Garden paths, landscaping, level surfaces only

Geocell H100

8710

100

Retaining walls, pedestrian areas, erosion control, tree root protection, slope reinforcement, landscaping

Geocell H150

8730

150

Road construction, tree root protection, retaining walls, erosion control. Recommended fill for vehicular applications: gravel, 20 mm or larger

Geocell H200

8720

200

Road construction, tree root protection, retaining walls, erosion control

All four share the same features:

  • Made from recycled perforated polyethylene
  • UV resistant, with a long product lifespan
  • Fill with gravel, soil, mulch or grass
  • Cut with a utility knife or strong scissors; join panels with cable ties

Where to use it

Geocell works anywhere loose material needs holding in place, from a back-garden path to a steep embankment.

  • Gravel paths and pedestrian areas. Cells stop stones migrating and ruts forming underfoot. Use H50 for garden walkways and H100 for busier pedestrian areas.
  • Slopes and embankments. Filled with soil and seeded, Geocell holds topsoil in place while vegetation roots through. H100 handles slopes up to 33°; H150 up to 45°.
  • Retaining walls. Stacked, gravel-filled layers of H100, H150 or H200 form a gravity retaining structure.
  • Tree root protection. Spreads load over root zones so paths can sit near trees without compacting the ground beneath.
  • Erosion control. Holds soil and aggregate in place against rain and surface water.
  • Grass reinforcement. Soil-filled cells support foot traffic on lawns that would otherwise turn to mud.

Why choose Vodaland Geocell

Geocell manages stormwater at source, uses recycled material and is made in our own factories.

  • Drains where it lands. A fully permeable surface cuts runoff and supports Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) on new builds and retrofits.
  • Recycled material. Every panel is made from recycled perforated polyethylene.
  • Made by us. We manufacture Geocell in our own plants in Ukraine, so we control quality from raw material to finished panel.
  • Light to handle. An H100 panel covering 15.3 m² weighs 16.8 kg and packs down to around 1,200 mm long, so one person can carry it.
  • Fewer materials needed. Confining the fill stops it spreading and sinking, so less aggregate is lost over time.

Installing Geocell

Most flat installations take four steps: prepare, stretch, anchor, fill.

  1. Prepare the ground. Clear stones, roots and debris. Level and compact the subsoil. For gravel surfaces, lay a non-woven geotextile and a compacted base of 20–25 mm crushed stone: at least 100 mm for light loads, 150 mm for medium and 200 mm for heavy.
  2. Stretch the panel. Unpack and open the panel across the area. Cut to shape with a utility knife and join panels with cable ties.
  3. Anchor it. Fix with Geocell plastic anchors or J-pins at every corner and every 3–4 cells around the perimeter. Allow 2–3 anchors per m², and add more on soft ground.
  4. Fill the cells. Use 8–12.5 mm crushed stone for gravel finishes, or soil for grass. Avoid pea gravel, which will not lock together.

On slopes, use H100 or deeper; H50 is for level ground only. Slope installations also use ropes and ground anchors threaded through the cells. Ask our team for the full mounting guide.
